SCHOOLS IN FOR WORKING DOGS AT MCMILLAN
ECG McMillan is set to start a course first at its Leongatha
campus offering a new Working Dogs course to help people train
dogs for use with stock or animals or to improve the
productivity of their dogs.
ECG Agriculture trainer Jennifer Bonham said the accredited
short course was being offered to the wider community in
response to increasing demand from people on the land and
students undertaking agriculture courses at McMillan to increase
their dog handling skills.
“This course has a strong hands-on focus and participants will
be given opportunities to experience handling and moving sheep,
cattle and ducks. They may bring their own dog to class or
utilise dogs provided.”
“The two day course will be delivered by Paul Macphail from
Beloka Kelpie Stud who has many years of experience and is well
reputed in the industry.”
Paul Macphail said a good, efficient working dog was an asset
to a farm operation and in many ways was an additional farm
worker.
“Many farmers don’t get the productivity from their dogs and
stock may be stressed because dogs are not trained correctly.
“This course aims to give participants the knowledge and
hands-on-skills including dog commands and obediance as well as
moving stock from one area to another.
“The program is tailored to anyone who has working dogs from
the small hobby farmer or weekender who may have 10 sheep and
one dog, to the hard core stockman who has 5,000 cows.”
The course will be delivered over two consecutive Wednesdays –
the 11th and 18 March from 9am – 3.30pm. Theory
classes will held at ECG McMillan campus Leongatha and practical
classes at Working Dog Education, South Gippsland Highway
Welshpool.
Successful completion of the course will earn one unit credit
for those wishing to complete Certificate 2 in Agriculture or to
progress to Certificate 3.
Additional and advanced courses in working dogs are also
offered by Paul Macphail’s Beloka Kelpie Stud on 5688 1250.
