RTE60203 Advance Diploma of Rural Business Management
Australian rural production is becoming increasingly sophisticated and competitive and this places heavy demands for skilled managers who are capable of dealing with today’s challenges. The size, complexity and value of rural businesses are increasing rapidly. There is a growing need for more sophisticated production management, financial management, advanced technology and human management skills appropriately applied in the rural business context.
For the Australian rural businesses to survive in global markets, a new breed of manager is needed. This person must possess an excellent array of skills, be qualified, creative, people-orientated and devoted to the rural sector.
The Advanced Diploma of Rural Business Management offers professional education and training to meet these challenges for both rural production and supportive businesses.
The objectives are to equip graduates from the course with the skills and underpinning knowledge to:
- Market products and services
- Implement quality assurance programs;
- Implement effective environmental management practices;
- Supervise and manage staff and provide them with a safe working environment;
- Prepare budgets and business plans and manage finance.
- Devise trading strategies.
- Manage Estate Planning
Course Duration &Location:
The course may be undertaken at McMillan College Warragul and can be studied as 2 years part time, 2 to 3 units per semester. Students may also select individual units and upgrade their skills at a pace that complements their business or personal obligations.
Evening classes for 2008 commence on Tuesday 4 th March 2008 though to Tuesday 11 th November 2008.
In addition, two summer school sessions are available on 7 th – 10 th February and 21 st to 24 th February 2008 at McMillan Campus Warragul.
For whom is this course designed?
This Training was developed for people wishing to increase their management skills and knowledge to be able to take a management role in a broad range of rural businesses.
Gaining admission to the course
Entrance requirements include a demonstrated interest in the specific level of vocational study applied for and a preparedness for workplace-based assessment of competence.
Preference is given to applicants who can demonstrate relevant business experience or previous school based vocational studies relating to these areas. There are credit arrangements for those who have completed equivalent previous studies and there is provision for recognition of prior learning.
Fees and charges
Tuition Fees:
Fees for Government funded courses, including apprentices and trainees are in accordance with the Ministerial Direction on Fees and Charges. For 2008 this is set at $1.37 per enrolled Student Contact Hour (SCH), with a minimum of $55.00 (based on 40 hours of tuition) and a maximum of $877.00 (based on 640 hours of tuition). These Fees apply to the 2008 calendar year. A student services fee of 56cents ($392.00 max) per nominal hour for on-campus studies and 30cents ($134.00 max) per nominal hour for off-campus study will be applied. Concession fees are available.
Fee Refunds:
Fee refunds forGovernment Funded Courses are available to students who withdraw and provide written notification, or complete an Application for Refund form and submit to the Administration section with four (4) weeks of the course commencement.
- Students who cancel or withdraw from their course within four weeks from the course commencement receive a full refund less the minimum enrolment fee of $55.00
- Students who withdraw to accept a place of study at another educational institution receive a full refund including the minimum enrolment fee of $55.00. The Letter of Offer from the alternate institution will need to be presented with the application for refund.
- Application for refund received after the four week period from course commencement will not be granted, unless the applicant can demonstrate cause for special consideration.

A total of 8 units of competency must be completed of which 4 units must be group A, and a further 4 units must be completed from group A, B or C. At least 6 units must relate to rural business work procedures and at least 6 of the units must be aligned clearly to Advanced Diploma outcomes. Units offered at McMillan will vary from semester to semester – refer 2008 timetable for units scheduled this year.
